A weekend with Fiona Millward and Andrea Buckley
Fiona and Andrea have created this new partnership out of a mutual interest in teaching as part of their creative practice. The content of the workshop is fuelled from their different perspectives and by their ongoing curiosity around perception, pattern, and relationship.
Each day will begin with taking time to notice the feedback from the body. Staying with this quiet observation, we will use a combination of Franklin Balls, experiential anatomy and/or touch within specific tasks, both alone and with a partner, to encourage where needed a sense of release, awakening, alignment, or balance. This will be interspersed with moments of guided improvisation to enable a deeper embodiment of changes that may have arisen, particular to each individual.
We will continue to deepen this exploration in the afternoon sessions giving focus to our creative potential within a compositional framework to help refine our relationship to gravity, space, self and other. There will be time to observe, share and reflect as a way to open up a sense of our ongoing practice.

More about Andrea…
Andrea Buckley works as an independent dance artist, whose experience extends over 20 years, performing teaching and creating work in various professional contexts to include the wider community. Her primary research draws upon an extensive range of improvisation and contact skills as a way to continue to develop an awareness of the moving body and expand a repertoire of composition. She has performed with many independent artists touring UK, Ireland, Europe and parts of America. These include; Kirstie Simson, Nancy Stark-Smith, MacLennan Dance & Company, Rosemary Lee, Gill Clarke and Deborah Hay.
Committed to work happening in the North West Andrea is part of an artist led initiative, Liverpool Improvisation Collective (LIC) – initiating workshops, festivals and performance projects – they have a designated artist led space at the Bluecoat, Liverpool. Presently as well as working with Siobhan Davies Dance, she is developing her own performance project Walking Within – Episode II in collaboration with film artist Dan Williams and Composer/musician Jamie McCarthy.

Fiona Millward regularly teaches in the UK and abroad both independently and for the British Council. Her teaching takes place in a variety of settings, from independent classes to companies and institutions, and for a range of participants, from dance artists to actors. She has led classes and workshops throughout the UK, and in US, Switzerland, Estonia, Russia, Bulgaria and Latvia. In 1997 she was nominated by The Place to represent the UK as part of the American Dance Festival International Choreographers residency, where she met Eric Franklin, and since qualifying in 2002 as a teacher in Franklin MethodTM Level 1 and 2, she has shared this work in many different contexts. She has enjoyed dancing for a variety of dance artists, including: Gill Clarke, Deborah Hay, Victoria Marks, Fin Walker, David Dorfman, Arlette George, Yael Flexer, and Stephen Koplowitz. Over the past year she has enjoyed working as a performer within the Barbican exhibition ‘Pioneers of the Downtown Scene New York 1970s’ and Gill Clarke’s commissioned work for Siobhan Davies Dance ‘A dance of ownership, a song in hand’ and Rehearsal Director for Rosemary Lee’s Dance Umbrella work ‘Square Dances’. She is currently a hub choreographer for Charlie Morrissey’s large scale event ‘Tree of Light’. Her choreographic work has received a variety of awards and commissions over the years, and she particularly values collaborative ventures with a variety of artists, in particular: Dance Artists Darrell Jones and Olga Zitluhina, Public Artist Jo Fairfax, NT and RSC Voice Coach and Theatre Director Jacquie Crago. From 1999 – 2004 Fiona was Head of Movement at the Oxford School of Drama and from 2001 – 2005 a recipient of a National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts fellowship (NESTA) for her work with the Professional training programme Independent Dance, based at the Siobhan Davies Studios, which she co-directed alongside Gill from 1996.
