Moved Series…Autumn 2016-Project Trans(m)it: Techniques and Tools for Long-Distance Collaboration
Can we have ‘embodied screentime’ with a dancer 3,000 miles away? Can we genuinely ‘transmit’ our moving selves through technology? What tools and processes best facilitate long-distance collaboration?

Take part in an interactive technological event exploring art-making over long distance. Led by dance artists and directors of Project Trans(m)it, Becca Weber (Coventry, UK), Megan Mizanty (NY, USA) and Lora Allen (Philadelphia, USA), this workshop will focus on long-distance collaboration. Weber, joined digitally by Mizanty and Allen, will facilitate a workshop on their findings from over a year of research and development in long-distance dance collaboration. You will learn tips, tools, and techniques on how to successfully collaborate over long-distances, best practices for choreographing via technology, and practice methods of transmission via your own tech devices. A wonderful opportunity for artists who are interested in creative collaboration, and who wish to broaden their creative network.
Moving into the 21st century, dance is encountering new territories of possibility. Project Trans(m)it is a collaborative, long-term, transcontinental collaborative research and performance project delving into tech-riddled space. It is led by choreographers Lora Allen (allendance), Becca Weber (Somanaut Dance) and Megan Mizanty (Mizanty Moves Dance Works). Their points of inquiry include transmittance of dance/movement via technology, transference of choreographic ideas in different continental spaces (all choreographers are based in different cities), what is gained/lost in these transfers, and which technological platforms are best used for which types of physical information transmission.
Weber, joined digitally by Mizanty and Allen, will facilitate a workshop on their findings from over a year of research and development of the project, and offer tips, tools, and techniques on how to successfully collaborate over long-distances through technology.
Rebecca Weber researches the intersections between dance, science, and Somatics. Weber is a PhD candidate at Coventry University’s Centre for Dance Research, while working on the Leverhulme Trust funded project, “In the Dancer’s Mind.” She is a Registered Somatic Movement Educator and holds an MFA in Dance from Temple University and an MA in Dance & Somatic Well-Being from the University of Central Lancashire. Her publications have featured in several journals, as well as the anthology Dance, Somatics, and Spiritualities: Contemporary Sacred Narratives (2014), for which she served as co-editor. Director of Somanaut Dance, Associate Editor of Dance, Movement, and Spiritualities, and Communications Director and Editor for thINKingDANCE.net, Weber has lectured on graduate and undergraduate programs at various institutions internationally. As Director of Somanaut Dance, her choreographic work has been presented in the US, UK, and Canada. www.somanautdance.com
Megan Mizanty is the artistic director of MizantyMoves Dance Works. She has danced professionally with companies in New York and Philadelphia, including Birds on a Wire Dance Theatre, Improbable Stage Productions, LINKED dancetheatre and toured with Matthew Frazier-Smith Dance, among others. She received a BA in English Literature from Ithaca College, and an MFA in choreography and performance from Temple University. Megan served four semesters as an undergraduate instructor at Temple University, as well as a communications specialist with Koresh Dance Company. She is a Stanley J. Wertheimer Fellow at Mark Morris Dance Center, where she is being certified as a Dance for Parkinson’s Disease Instructor. Much of Megan’s work bridges live sound with movement, entangling these disciplines with collaboration at its heart. She had taught and served as a resident choreographer at Susquehanna University, Lycoming College and Marywood University, and she is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Dance at Wilson College.
Lora Allen is the artistic director of allendance. Her work has been shown in New York City, Philadelphia, Louisiana, California, and throughout Pennsylvania.
